-Chernobyl- Fact book Entry
Introduction:

Background:
-Chernobyl- consists of a large chain of islands in the Northern reaches of the ocean. These islands were the sites of four nuclear reactors, which are still in operation, uranium and plutonium mining operations, two refineries, and a nuclear waste processing plant. These were operated by a group of nations interested in developing nuclear power, who also shared sovereignty over the area. An experimental, fifth reactor was built, but a meltdown occurred eight days after it began operating, this is now referred to as the reactor five incident. After the meltdown, the involved countries evacuated the majority of their respective citizens, and the islands were left with only 4% of their original population. Large groups of people seeking a land free of government, exiles, and those seeking to make their fortune on one of the frontiers of society, migrated to -Chernobyl-. Since the repopulation began, -Chernobyl- has formed its own democratic government, received formal recognition as an independent nation, and has exceeded its previous population, reaching 425 million at the last census. It now has a modern, technologically advanced economy, with a GDP per capita equal to or higher than that of most developed countries. The economy is characterized by quick, yet stable growth, low unemployment, and continued advances in technology.
