BACK IN 1995, a loose group of Anglophones and Francophones from the city of Montréal were fed up with the unstable, endlessly squabbling polity in which they lived, and resolved to find someplace less insane to live.

So they commissioned a fleet of liners, container ships, and tankers for a colonization mission. Fronted by the recent decommissioned, but still seaworthy, aircraft carrier H.M.S. Bonaventure, the motley crew, inexplicably mostly Orthodox Christians, sailed out into the Atlantic. They somehow ended up in The Kingdom of the Midlands.

FOUNDING

The colonists landed and established Camp Bonaventure, which eventually expanded into Port Bonaventure. Other nearby settlements quickly sprang up, including Rosemont-Petit-Patrie, Angebourg, New Beaconsfield, Newman City, and St-Jean-de-L'Échelle. More ambitious settlers moved further south, founding Sherbrooke, south-east to found Valdemont, and due east to found Laval. Once the population reached 5 million, the new nation publicly declared itself to exist in accordance with the finest traditions of the multiverse. The six original settlements, now running up against each other on the margins, were united to form the new capital of New Montreal.

Paladinates, whimsically taking their title from the knights from the Song of Roland, were organized as the NMS version of states. Valdemont, Laval, New Montreal and Sherbrooke.

NEIGHBORS TO THE STARS

While Euroslavia and company did...whatever it was they did, the fledgling NMS seized a toehold in The Kingdom of the Midlands. Earning its place by helping Nanakaland in a colonial war against one of the many Bigtopias that haunt the multiverse, the NMS carved out the Bigtopian Colonies as their first-ever manifestly unjust overseas expansion. The dispossessed natives would revolt twice before ultimately assimilating, and the NMS added the St. James river valley and Outer Bigtopia to its territory. The cities of St. James and Moncton Sands were founded as colonial centers, and slowly expanded into the cosmopolitan, albeit slightly more Anglophone than average, cities they are today.

WORLD CUP 10

Bedistan dissed us, then lost to us 1-0 in Bedistan. Don't mock our soccer team, is what we're saying here.

WORLD CUP 11

We finished 4th and didn't find out for an entire year.

SEVERAL ADDITIONAL WAVES OF COLONISTS

More colonists kept arriving in the NMS, as the nation turned inwards for several generations. New Paladinates were founded at Angiers, St-Hubert and Dorion inland, Philemon and Ville-Marie on the North Coast, and the "French River" cities along the Chateauguay River, Chateauguay and Sorel.

THAT ONE TIME WE LOST TO SQUORNSHELOUS

That sucked.

WHY, DESPITE BEING ONE OF THE HANDFUL OF NON-AO NATIONS THAT ENJOYED ANY PROMINENCE AT ALL DURING THE AO DYNASTY, DID WE END UP HERE?

We looked around one day and realized that the Kingdom of the Midlands had disintegrated around us. Operation Continental Drift brought us over here.

We managed to relocate everyone in more-or-less their same relative locations, and we also found a couple of empty islands nobody else was using. The new Paladinate of the Moyenne-Isles has been added to the States!
