"Falcania," said King Falcon II from the lectern, "Will always be great. I think I can say with certainty that we will always be a strong nation of extraordinary people." He took a sip of water before continuing. "However, the way we exercise this greatness is our true measure. With the tools at our disposal, we have a choice, all of us. Power can be used for tyranny, to force people to do what you want to do, but it can be put to better use, I think, to force people to do what they want to do. People have criticised our government. They have criticised me, my rule, saying that because I am a King, I make decisions that suit me. They have even gone as far as to call me undemocratic! Perhaps in a nation of weaker people that would be true. But I am a Falcanian, and I will always have the best interests of my nation at heart! For this is the secret. Power is not for those who would use it to rule, but for those who would use it to make people free. And that is why on this day, the First of August, we Falcanians celebrate that which is what makes us great - not our power, but our freedom!"

The cheers erupted from the crowds, only subsiding as Falcon prepared his conclusion.

"My father masterminded the airport here at New Shirley. And it was here, at the laying of the cornerstone, all those years ago, that he was taken from us. My father fought the oppressors, eye to eye, over fifty years ago. He fought for the freedom of our great nation. He later died for it. So today, on the anniversary of the laying of the cornerstone of this airport, the anniversary of the death of King Falcon I, and on the anniversary of freedom for all Falcania, I declare New Shirley Airport open!"

The officials took over, and Falcon was carried by the rush of the crowds into the airport itself.

"Excellent work, sire."

"Oh shush, you'll embarrass me." King Falcon II climbed the stairs to the Starling, smiling and waving to the assembled crowds at the Day of Freedom celebrations at the unveiling of the New Shirley International Airport. His minister for transport, Lord Tarrick, had blathered to him a few numbers about the economic opportunities of this new transport hub for the up-coming city of New Shirley, but Falcon did not much care for the figures - today was August 1st, Day of Freedom, anniversary of his father's death, and of the airport, testament to his father's indomitable will.

He smiled gently as he heard the Thomas-Alistair engines whine and thrum, and the Starling lifted into the sky.

Far below, the crowds screamed and gasped in horror as they saw the Royal plane burst into a fireball and plummet towards the ground.

David Hawdon was sitting at his desk, a cup of tea on his left. Piles of reports, papers and the very unglamorous work of office, signing papers. It was still 2 hours till the next Question Time and he was expecting to be assaulted by opposition. However he thought he had a couple of ideas to turn the tables on them.

Until the foreign minister bursted in,

"Dave you should see this."

He grabbed a remote and turned the TV on in the room, the news shown the few known remnants of the plane after King Falcon had entered it.

"Bloody Heck."

It wasn't long until he was addressing the nation, he looked down the barrel of the camera.

"Today we have witness a tragedy, King Falcon of Falcania has died in an aircraft explosion at the newly opened New Shirley International Airport. The Bazalonian government on behalf of our people express our deep condolences to the Falcanian people. If there is anything that we can do, the Falcanian people know that they just to ask."

Lord Tarrick had personally led the inquiry into the explosion, hand-picking his own team from the Air Force, Air Navy and Jay Industries to examine the incident. A week had passed with no executive head of state - a tricky circumstance to be in, especially as the King died with no heir to the throne. On August 8th, Tarrick published the findings of the inquiry - a faulty valve had sucked burning fuel from the afterburner into the fuel tank, causing a catastrophic detonation.

On the same day, as the Mathdon Examiner questioned the scientific grounding of the report's findings, the competing (and less reputable) Daily Icarus praised Lord Tarrick for his compassion in personally taking on the inquiry, and called for "His Lordship" to be crowned King. This idea soon took hold and polls up and down the country called for Lord Tarrick to be made the ruler of all Falcania.

Tarrick gave a press conference on the 15th. He reported to be honoured by the public faith in him, and revealed that, in spite of several resignations, the government had officially accepted Lord Tarrick's coronation. Tarrick said that he would not be crowned King, as this would be disrespectful to the Falcon lineage, but said he would be honoured to take up the role of Lord Protector.

The ceremony took place on the 16th.
