The full page ad in the Nephi Times was attention getting, to say the least. So was what the ad was claiming.

The Lamonian wine industry was going to be based in the eastern half of the nation, where the vast majority of Lamoni's wine grapes are already grown east of the Norton Mountain range; which provides an ideal dry, sunny climate for growing world-class wine grapes. Eastern Lamoni's arid, calcareous and sandy soils encourage the mineral notes, depth and softness that would set Lamonian wines apart from other regions. The mild climate on the Western side of the country is perfect for growing classic noble grape varietals and fruit, as well as some hard-to-find grape varieties.

Lamoni's 17.4 hours of daily sunlight during the growing season and warm days allow the grapes ripen fully, while cool nights keep fruit acids high, creating rich, flavorful, well-balanced wines. With existing wine grape vines primarily grown on their own root stocks, which contributes to the health of the vines, Lamonian vines produce grapes of consistent quality, resulting in strong vintages year after year. The new wineries would follow the same practices, and there was also a line about recruiting Pacitalian wine makers to teach Viticulture in Lamonian universities. A wine industry with an estimated retail value of over 684.9 million NS Standard Dollars was not believed to be out of the question... and the article went on to promise several more things in the print size needed to fit all of this onto the ad.

George and Mark were walking through the new Valentino Vineyards, happy with their new jobs as quality inspectors. As they were checking on the grapes, they talked with each other.

"Can you believe that the government started all this with just one full page newspaper ad?," George asked. "From that, there are now some one hundred wineries, and that number is only expected to increase. Hotels, an improved transportation network, and restaurants are either being built, or are being planned. I guess that the government is expecting even more than the ad said."

Mark was more of a pessimist. "That damn ad. It's all anyone has talked about for a year now. Sure, it's brought a lot of investment into the empty desert, but who would want to come out here and drink wine? It's just so... BORING."

George always thought that he had an answer for everything, if only everyone would just listen to him. "That would be the same people who like the idea of drinking the varieties that have been planted so far. There is Aligote, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Chenin Blanc, Gewurztraminer, Grenache, Lemberger, Leon Millot, Madeleine Angevine, Madeleine Sylvaner, Malbec, Marechal Foch, Merlot, Muller Thurgau, Muscat Canelli, Muscat Ottonel, Petit Verdot, Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Riesling, Roussanne, Sangiovese, Sauvignon Blanc, Semillon, Siegerrebe, Syrah, Viognier, and Zinfandel. Sure, some of them are doing better than others, but what else can you expect when you start a wine industry from scratch?"

One of the Pacitalians who had agreed to teach viticulture in Lamoni decided to walk by at that moment, and the two went back to what they were doing. Wine making was a historical part of Pacitalian civilization, so they tended to come off as snobbish about the whole wine making process.

After they had gathered the grapes that they were going to test, they headed inside with the grapes, and started testing their chemical and PH balances. When these turned out to be good for making wine, they celebrated with a bottle of Pinot Noir that George had been able to obtain, and went home for the night, due to be back at the winery in the morning.
