ANÁLISE ESPORTIVA
olhar sobre a Copa AOCAF - por Carlos Alberto Gujabre

I bet you bought this newspaper eager to read this section, after watching the game between Cafundéu and Pacitalia for the semifinals of the AOCAF. I'm sure that you watched several different sports programs on the television just to be able to see again the highlights of the game, the penalty shootout and the commemoration and interviews of the excited Monopolists after the game. I believe you browsed the entire internet looking for articles with their positive comments about the performances of the Cafundelense National Team. Yes, this is our moment, the whole region is commenting about the great results of Cafundéu in this competition, and how this team managed to defeat the two biggest favourites for the trophy in order to reach the final... but we can't forget that on the other side is a team that managed to do the same feat: reach the final of the AOCAF Cup, and this team is Sorthern Northland.

So, as you probably are expecting, I'll comment about the game against Pacitalia, in which the Monopolists fought hard in a way we've seen few times, and managed to clinch the victory on penalties. The Cafundelense team entered in the field using the same players who played the first game of the competition, curiously against Pacitalia, in which Cafundéu lost by the result of 2x1, without being able to threatening the opponents. This time, when the referee whistled ordering the game to begin, the Monopolists showed a completely different attitude, fighting much more for the ball. It was clear that their motivation and confidence was entirely another in this semifinal game. Cafundéu had the first good goal chances, one of them with Jean Carlo who shot with accuracy, but Zolà could make a magnificent save. The Monopolists seemed ready to pressure the opponents on their defensive area, but Pacitalia soon began to counterattack with ferocity, forcing the Cafundelenses to retreat.

After the twentieth minute of the first half, the Cafundelenses seemed to lose even more terrain, and the moment was for Pacitalia to attack. Murilo managed to save the Monopolists from suffering a goal twice, while Cafundéu hoped to conclude a counterattack with a goal. Unfortunately for the red-black team, this didn't happen, with the Blue Foxes being able to score first. Adiarche found Vunghiasso in the left wing, and the midfielder crossed the ball to the area, where Giurimano headed perfectly, giving no chances to Murilo. That goal was the only one of the first half, and for the second the Cafundelense coach Andreas Gilsoweller Veiga repeated the strategy which worked in the game against Starblaydia: the entrance of a third attacker in the team. When the second half begun, Cafundéu hoped to reach the goal, but nearly suffered the second: a long ranged shot by da Scupeta hit the bar. For minutes, the teams alternated attacks and, with some ten minutes for the game to end, both teams slowed down.

And, when Pacitalia was expecting to calmly hold the victory, the Monopolists found the way to the goal. Radicci received the ball on the left wing from Mané, and crossed the ball to the area. Surprisingly, the ball made a curve and deceived Zolà completely, entering directly to the goal. With this, the game went to extra time... and no one really wanted to play extra time. This was an intense game, and the only players who weren't tired were the ones who played less than twenty minutes during the second half. So, as could be expected, few good moves were done during the next thirty minutes, and the game went to penalties. I guess many of you thought your hearts would have a problem during the shootout... Pacitalia started... and Murilo saved! I heard the fireworks coming from all the places, even louder when Miguel Silva scored. But then the Blue Foxes scored the next three penalty kicks and, even with the Cafundelenses also scoring too, that was a stressful situation. Finally, in the fifth penalty of Pacitalia... Murilo saved again, and the victory was ours!

At that time, we already knew which team we were going to face in the final game of this AOCAF Cup. Sorthern Northland managed to defeat Krytenia, the hosts, and were set to play Cafundéu in Emberton. I wonder if anyone was really expecting the final to involve these two countries, but that's football... full of surprises. Well, sometimes it is full of surprises, not always. About the final itself, Veiga fortunately won't have any problems in choosing the starting eleven for the game, as none of the players got suspended or injured, so the Monopolists will have full strength available for the decisive match... and, with another positive performance, it is certain that the calls for Veiga to send as many players from this team as possible to the team that will play the World Cup will increase. And aren't they right? Jean Carlo is in better form than Alves, I believe, the same about Radicci, who can overtake Leonardo.

Andrews sets up decider against Cafundéu

Jon Andrews put in a performance that he described as “the best of my life” to put Sorthern Northland into the final of AOCAF Cup 27. As well as scoring the winning goal in the seventy-fourth minute Andrews also set up Marek Krofcky's fifty-second minute goal that bought Sorthern Northland back into the game after Calvin Howard had put Krytenia ahead after thirty-three minutes. Until Krofcky's goal Krytenia had had the better chances of the game and will be rueing having missed a number of chances.

That thought wasn't much of a concern for Sorthern manager Eoin Ó Raghallaigh who after the game said, “Being at home we always knew that Krytenia were going to put us under a lot of pressure and create a number of chances. Our job was to ride out that pressure, be patient and when we got some chances take them, and that's what we did. I'm very happy with how we played, but it means nothing if we don't win the final.”

The final will now see Sorthern Northland take on Cafundéu, with both nations looking to win the AOCAF Cup for the first time in their history. Sorthern Northland's history until this tournament has been one of no success, partly due to the contempt with which former manager Merginn Moffat showed to the tournament. New manager Ó Raghallaigh though has brought in a new mentality into the squad with regard to the tournament, for Ó Raghallaigh though it will only have truly been taken in should his squad come out winners against Cafundéu

The Football Paper

Editorial

Sorthern Northland are just hours away from their biggest moment yet and it proves that the SNFA's decision to sack Merginn Moffat was the right choice. Don't get me wrong, he was a great manager and the side wouldn't be where it now is without him, similarly they wouldn't be in the AOCAF Cup final if they still had him. The team he inherited from Rodney Toulere prior to World Cup 43 qualification were a bunch of also rans, the team he left for Eoin Ó Raghallaigh during qualification for the last World Cup is one that's able to be among the best nations of the world.

Moffat though wasn't the man to take this nation's team that one step further to becoming world beaters and a team able to win the major international competitions. He may have taken the team to just below the summit of the mountain, but a different man is needed to complete the final ascent to the peak. That man is Ó Raghallaigh. If Alan Cooper does go up to lift the AOCAF Cup then Ó Raghallaigh will undoubtedly hailed a national hero and rightly so, however Merginn Moffat should also be held in high esteem but he has only been part of the climb and was only the man to lay the foundations of it rather than the man to complete it.

Fans warned to exercise caution beside Lake Bekk

Following the triumph of the Sorthern Northland national football in lifting the coveted AOCAF Cup just hours before the 1st of September, birthday of former President Ben O'Bagels and the Sorthern new year, the Foreign Office has advised would be celebrators to avoid Krytenia's Bekk coast following the announcement from Krytenian authorities that dredging the lake would be left to Starblaydia should anyone fall in.

A statement on the Foreign Office's website reads, “Whilst we encourage the many fans that made to way to Krytenia for the tournament to celebrate long and hard, it is advisable that they avoid the Bekk coast areas of the country. A large number of anatidae are known to infest the lake, as we have seen at the Di Bradini Cup in the past, and with Krytenia seemingly unwilling to guarantee the safety of our fans should anything happen to any of them in that region of the country we urge Sorthern nationals to stay away from it.”

Celebrations from Sortherners across the NSverse are understood to have been lively, with many thought to be ongoing. Residents in Pocini border-towns are understood to have reported numerous sightings of what have been described as “rather drunk people running around with traffic cones and other assorted items of road safety on their heads”. A Sorthern ex-pat in the Candelaris capital Albrecht meanwhile described the scenes in the city's Irish Street district, a hotbed of Sorthern culture, as “really pumping like, like really pumping. Oi don't tink anyone of ye lads here has slept for a good couple o' nights now. Oi'd be worried dat de place will be running dry sooner or later to tell ye' the truth”. Sorthern ex-pats in Yafor 2 meanwhile are understood to be “incredibly pissed off” after seeing five goals scored in the final.
