The Love of NationStates

A nation in a fictional world is all that you need to stay occupied for what seems like an eternity. The screen's glow is all the comfort in the world you need to be happy. Falling asleep at night knowing that no one can take away something that you have created from scratch. Something that you've worked hard and have made so many decisions for. Something that you grow to love. This my friend is your nation.

The harsh consequences of reality seem to crush you as war is fought in all corners of the world and millions of innocent people die each year because of a psychotic leader. Nationstates is much different than that. You can declare war on a nation without any blood being spilled except of those being written by devoted players behind their screen and tapping away on their keyboards. Being the leader of your nation means that anything you say goes, whether good or bad.

No one to discriminate your people from race, religion or political system. The only thing that seperates you from your nation is an annoying thing called reality. Watching as your nation grows and prospers into something wonderous and amazing. Watching and waiting for the next underground movement to rise up and tear the nation in half.

The blood-curling screams in war-torn countries are deafened by the words written as you decide whether to retaliate with a force of your own or let the radicals take over and force a new beginning for you. The gunshots from around the world are silenced by the tapping of the keys as you sit alone in the safety of the computer room.

Wills are crushed by invading nations forcing a horrible surrender or a glorious victory. Your will behind the screen undaunted as you look in the paper to see another car bomb explode in a far-away nation. "There will be nothing like that here." You say as you resume your response on why the invading nation was ambushed in your capitol city or setting out the final touches on the doomsday device your scientists have made.

There is more to love about this place of beautiful fiction. Celebrating your nation's victory in the latest World Cup sending you through to face a player with as much love of the game as you. Skipping your own sports activities to play in the fictional ones. A place where a simple score posted can make you feel like the best person in the world or make you feel like you were cheated. Nevertheless it's truly something to behold when you excel over another in a world where you may seem to fall below many.

Skipping classes to spend countless hours on the computer typing how much cooler your nation name is. Missed homework assignments handed in with false excuses when you know that when you could be striving for that "A" in Political Science you're striving for world dominance on the forums. Losing sleep seems like a small price to pay when you can brag on about how badly a weaker nation fell at the might of yours.

Nothing in the world matters but the game. Nothing or no one can take away the connection you have with thousands of other players via Nationstates. Going days without leaving the computer room with mild snacks and the only excuse to leave is a breif washroom break or microwaving another meal. The flag of your nation posted in your room reminds you that you have a commitment to the fictional millions backed behind you. Supporting that tax cut, or trying to escape the inevitable draft.

The motto is taking over your daily speech as your love of the game grows as steady as the population. The new religion worships Max Barry, the creator, the god. Other nations follow you as you propose new ideas in the UN, secretly knowing that you have countless fiction people in the palm of your hands willing to die for a few simple keystrokes.

You may not be the most popular person in the real world. Maybe not even in nationstates. But the love of the game is something that will hopefully never die out.

For the love of the game.

The love of Nationstates.
