For those of us who don't like football, there's not so much on offer from a regional competition perspective. Therefore I created this thread in the interest of discussing alternative sports for intra-regional competition - after all, there's only so much footy a guy can take, right?

I recall a while back we had an AO motor racing competition on an external site. That was pretty cool. It made me pine for more. Perhaps another such contest?

Another idea I was knocking about was the idea of a sort of Mixed Martial Arts tournament - this could let each competitor showcase a lot of national culture as there are at least as many different ways of fighting as there are nationalities, as well as letting us butch men have testosterone contests tongue.gif

Ultimately though I'd like an open debate on this subject. So, AO, what are your thoughts?

Although I agree with you Falc, I think there's interest, but it all comes down to time.

(Note: rant/honesty mode on)

When I moved to AO several RL years ago, I think there was some sort of racing league (not my cup of tea), the AO Regional Basketball Championship, and an occasional "Amazing Race" sort of thing.

IMO, AOCAF stood the test of time not only due to interest, but availability of resources and time of those who like it. Soccer/football isn't a sport I follow much IRL (and it probably shows in the RPs I have time to write), but I participate for the sake of giving others another team to play.

I know for a fact if I had the time, I'd probably offer to set up another basketball tournament (even though the last one several RL years ago was lightly attended), however I'd probably annoy everyone with a more leisurely pace (probably about one or two game sims a week, three at the most). 10 years ago I was bored and wrote a program in QBasic (heh, remember that?) that generated basketball game scores, however I'm sure I'd be accused of running my own program as a means of bending results to my liking.

(Note: rant/honesty mode off)

Overall, yes I do like the idea of more regional sports competitions. The main question I have is: do others with the time and interest want to participate?

I like the sound of the martial arts - Ice Hockey might be fun as well, but as 95X said, it all comes down to interest.

I would throw someone in for the MMA competition, but hockey? Never.

Well, the whole ns board doesn't have huge interest levels for most sports besides football.

I would struggle to find the extra time myself once uni starts again and I really doubt whether this one region could muster up enough to have more than a mini tournament.

We did an American football (Sarzonian name: gridball) tournament called AO Bowl for two iterations. The third one never got started, I'm afraid.

For anyone who's interested, the original thread is here.

I might be interested in some possibilities, although not Baseball/BasketBall/Gridiron, but time would be a major limiting factor...
... especially with NS Summer Olympics coming up, fairly soon, anyway...

So I'm hearing a lot of buzz about a MMA tournament. Provisionally, who would be in, and would you expect me to run it?

A bit of a grave-dig here, but I'm new on this forum. Apologies in advance.

My primary nation is not in AO, but is known for scorinator development. One of its back-burner projects is a MMA scorinator. I think that might be an excellent prospect for a long-term, low-RP-intensity alternative sport that lets folks come and go without much fuss.

Comments, anyone?

Potentially interested in the MMA tournament.

BTW, does anybody here have a scorinator that they think could handle outrigger canoe races (canoes with crews of maybe 16 people, racing for several miles on the sea) properly?

That's great news on the MMA Scorinator. I like the notion of having it more based on individuals than nations.

Also, is Vilita still around? I don't recall if we ever did get the third season up and running but I loved the Open Wheel tournament. I'd love to give another season a go.
