Atlantian Spaam is a colony of the much larger nation of Spaam, in the Heartland region.
History
It was laid claim to in 1836, when a number of mostly uninhabited islands were discovered in the North-West of Atlantian Oceania by a group of explorers captained by Jonathon Waffleton III. They were searching for free land to the South-East of Spaam, when they came upon the main island, Vava. Exploring the West coast of the island, they found no inhabitants, and claimed it for Spaam. They sent a ship back for provisions and further explorers, while they continued to navigate the island. In that time, they also claimed Sosa and Ghua, where they found a few natives. To supplicate them, they gave the natives some cheap tourist trinkets, and a couple of barrels of rum. Waffleton was eventually killed when he tried to claim Nova Roma, and was slapped repeatedly in the face with a large trout.
Geography
Atlantian Spaam is made up of three main islands. Vava, the largest and most North-Western, has seven active volcanoes, which caused a lot of trouble for early settlers. The only truly habitable area is the Southern tip of the island Sosa, slightly smaller than Vava, is the most South-Eastern, and contains five active volcanoes, all on the Western coast. This means that the Eastern coast is habitable, but is hindered by numerous rocky cliffs. Ghua is the smallest of the islands, and contains the most habitable area. A very mountainous island, it only contains one volcano, which is long since dormant. There is some area for crops and animals, but not enough to contain a large population. Native fruit is abundant on the Eastern coast of Sosa, as well as some edible large native birds on the Southern tip of Vava.
People
The population of Atlantian Spaam is approximately 32000, and population growth is minimal. Three-quarters of the population lives on Ghua, with a fifth on Vava, and the rest on Sosa. The capital city is Venga, with a population of almost 5000. The people are sustained by a small amount of crops and farm-animals, and abundance of native fruits, but also import processed food from the mainlands. There is a burgeoning industry in Sosian Rum, which is made from the fermented fruit of the Nona tree. The large majority of the people are Catholic, with numerous churches dotting the islands. The people love football, vervently supporting the Spaamanian Waffles, and their own team, which occasionally plays against other nations in Atlantian Oceania. The islands last played Spaam in 2110, and lost 32:0, though their players were mostly star-struck with playing against their idols.
