New Gordonopia... the colony United Gordonopia forgot... until now.

History

In 1895, amidst its 'Second Golden Age of Expansion', thousands of settlers from United Gordonopia made the long journey from Greater Dienstad to Atlantian Oceania hoping to establish a colony. While many of their expansion-minded comrades opted for relatively uninhabited islands in and around Gordonopia's home region, these intrepid individuals chose a well-established, advanced region for their new home.

Because so much of the region was already inhabited, the colonists were forced to set up their outposts in a part of Atlantian Oceania densely covered with sparsely inhabited jungles. Though many of the early settlers fell victim to disease, they slowly managed to forge a new society.

For much of the next century, the colony played little into the affairs of its motherland. While there was regular trade between the Gordonopian mainland and 'New Gordonopia', as well as a steady influx of migrants to the growing colony, Atlantian Oceania's distance from Greater Dienstad prevented it from playing a major role in United Gordonopia's strategic affairs.

By the turn of the millennium, New Gordonopia had grown from a small series of scattered outposts into a developed society on par with Gordonopia's largest overseas territories such as Bahar and Latimere, and was home to roughly ten million souls. Three urban centers, Woodward, Kjin, and Danmeir, reflected the various backgrounds of the initial settlers, and dominated the colony's society.

New Gordonopia briefly lost contact with the mainland, though, when the War of Restoration flared up. As the Monarchist and Republican forces fought battles of epic proportions, the far flung colonial possession remained relatively untouched. When the Monarchists ultimately toppled the aging, corrupt Republican government, few in the colony paid much attention. As a colony, and one so far from their homeland, their government affairs had never been much affected by goings on back home.

Likewise, little attention was placed on the small territory until after United Gordonopia exploded into the sporting world. It was after United Gordonopia's unexpected semi-final run in World Cup 63 that the eyes of the nation turned to this small outpost.

Several major Gordonopia Premier League clubs began scouting operations in the colony, and the Gordonopia Football Association announced that it had reached a deal to allow players from New Gordonopia to participate in AOCAF. In coming years, it is hoped that this long-overlooked colony in the beating heart of world sport will help fuel Gordonopian athletics to even greater heights.

Sport

New Gordonopia is home to the New Gordonopia National Football Team and the League New Gordonopia, a regional league on the second tier of the United Gordonopian pyramid. Players for the LNG are almost all domestic, some hailing from the mainland but most from New Gordonopia itself. The winner each year of the league is entered into the Inter-League Cup, hosted in Gordonopia City in the mainland, where the winners of the eight regional leagues play to settle promotion to the Gordonopia Premier League.

The national team is distinct in that it is intended to play only in AOCAF. This is done so as to preserve eligibility for the best New Gordonopian players to participate on United Gordonopia's national team, and it is believed that a few may make the roster as soon as the World Cup 65 cycle.

The only other sport with a significant following in New Gordonopia is running. New Gordonopia is well known within the Gordonopian athletic community for producing distance runners, and many have gone to top colleges on the mainland for scholarships in the 800m and longer.

Culture

Being such an independent colony has helped shape the attitude of New Gordonopia's inhabitants. As compared to their more regimented mainland brethren, New Gordonopians tend to take on a rough, individualistic nature. By some from Gordonopia proper, this is seen as 'colonial' or even 'backwards', but New Gordonopians are proud of their distinct character.

Military

As with all oversees territories, United Gordonopia maintains a military presence in New Gordonopia. The 5th Ark Royal Class Carrier Group, composed of 26 ships of various sizes, is based in the capitol, Woodward. Its ships are spread throughout the colony's ports, with some on patrol. Additionally, an infantry division is based out of Woodward, with each of the three main cities hosting one of the three brigade headquarters. Finally, a ground based air wing of 48 aircraft of various classes provides the final part of New Gordonopia's garrison.

The force is based in New Gordonopia for two purposes. The primary objective is the defense of the colony. Due to the high level of technology and training that has resulted from several recent major conflicts, the Gordonopian soldiers headquartered in the colony are well prepared for any crisis. Furthermore, the vase jungles that are still pervasive outside the major cities allows for the military forces to initiate a guerilla warfare strategy, should the primary settlements be overrun.

The secondary purpose of the forces in New Gordonopia, particularly the naval detachment, is to secure the sea lanes to the Gordonopian mainland. At least two flotillas, roughly a quarter of the force, are on patrol at all times in order to protect the colony's maritime link with its motherland.
